Is there any way to determine the duration of a video from a script without playing it if XBMC doesn't have the data in the streamdetails table? I see that the CDVDFileInfo class ends up grabbing this data, and the CVideoThumbLoader class calls that, but as far as I can tell there is no way for a script to force this action. Is there some trick I can use for this?

Nope - no way of pulling that off from a script short of playing the video (which sets it).
