Geez... The display doesn't fit the TV?!?!

I'll pass that info along. He hasn't made a purchase yet, but is kind of "anti-projector". Even though it would go in a basement without windows, He's never been impressed with the picture quality or brightness on projector systems. Keep in mind though, this is very much a man-cave type setup with lots of neon and such. He doesn't want to keep it so dark down there that he can't have a bunch of people over for a hockey game without there being problems due to lack of light.

Problem is that DLPs aren't very bright either. Any decent plasma or LCD will literally blow away a DLP with contrast and brightness.

DLPs are only good if you need huge, and you need it cheap. Any other concerns (picture quality, thinness, etc.) is won by other technology, hence why DLP is dying.

Honestly man-caves are a plasma's best friend...

So even in a darker, light controlled setting a projector is not a great choice?

In a dark movie theater type room projectors can be amazing. They just have serious limitations when used as your "casual TV." The black is only as dark as the room. I've been in "movie" rooms in houses with projectors and have been blown away. Most people don't have a room setup well enough for it.

Projection TVs, DLP/SXRD/LCD, have mostly died out because of the "flatness" of plasma and LCD tvs, not really because the technology or quality was lacking. In fact the SXRD tvs were of the highest rated TVs when they came out, unfortunately for the tech they didn't sell very well. Early DLPs had some rainbow effect problems, but the later and current ones don't. Modern DLPs are even lit with LED lights that last forever.

They won't be "as bright" as a Plasma or LCD out of the box, but if you properly setup (professionally calibrated) both TVs they'll be nearly identical. They won't hang on the wall though Smile

You should go to this site and browse the threads. It is the place to get your TV questions answered for display devices. (Many threads on the mits in rear projection)

Not on the xbmc forum.

You need to understand, that everyones visual and audio experiences are as different as our fingerprints. You need to see and hear devices before you buy, period. And don't ever take anyone's advice of which is better, you make that decision by going out and looking.
