WD Caviar Green 1.5TB HDD on sale @ NewEgg
#1
I'm new to the game and I've been lurking for a few days and am slowly putting together a build based on your posts. I was going to go with a 30GB SSD or the Caviar 500GB HDD - until I saw this deal in my email box this morning.

I can't find any reviews for this drive - do any of you recommend this for my build in lieu of the SSD? I can always add the SSD at a later time, just trying to keep my cost down.

Thanks for all of your informative recommendations, this forum is a great resource for us newbies

STAY AWAY FROM WD if you ever have the idea in the back of your mind that you might ever want RAID, ZFS, etc. @(#*$& Wester Digital drives.

And they just went back up, they were on sale. But Amazon had the 2TB 6.0Gbps Hitachi on sale for $70.

It's now $89 shipped, but $10 more for 1/3 more space and twice the theoretical transfer rate...

While I don't have any experience with the suggested Hitatchi drive, I've never had much luck other "Deathstar" models. Definitely stay away from WD though.

I reccommend the Samsung Spinpoint F4. I have 8 of the 2TB variety and they work well in RAID setups. Previously, I used Seagate 1TB 7200rpm drives and have had a lot of trouble with them in RAID... SMART errors and wanting to drop out of the array. I normally use Seagate drives as standalones and have always had good luck with them.

You can get a Samsung 2TB for $79.99 w/ free shipping here:

Slightly worried you recommended buying Spinpoint F4s and didn't recommend the firmware patch. Make sure you install this if you don't want bad blocks Wink

As for WD Caviar Greens, I've just bought 3 for my UnRaid server, as long as you disable or increase the head park time I don't see a problem with them for that purpose.

Most 2TB drives seem to have some quirk with them atm, it's just a case of picking whichever drives has the one that worries you least :p

Good point. I'd nearly forgotten about that. You can get the patch here:

What's the issue with RAID and WD drives? Currently I have 4 WD 2TB drives in my WHS. If I ever upgrade to the next version of WHS I believe I am going to have to set them up in a RAID due to MS dropping drive extender support.

I just bought a 2tb WD Caviar Green. It passed all the checks and isn't the fastest drive but it is REALLY quiet and since space and quietness were my primary objectives, it's a fit. Even with the case off, it's hard to tell if the system is on. I haven't checked power use but I will play around with the head parking issue. I have other WD drives that are reaching 5 years or more and are still in use.

The WD Green are best for spaces where heat is an issue (like a system that is a HTPC AND a NAS). They run super cool.

With that said, anything less than 2TB is a waste nowadays...

I'm noticing nearly all of the cheap 1.5TB+ drives these days are the advanced format drives. Are people using them with XP or WHS? Is the jumper method fine for making them work with older operating systems? I'd like to add one more drive but I don't want to upgrade the OS on my NAS.

The jumper works fine with no performance lost on WD Greens...
