Well...he is pretty clear on that one...:
"No. Please do NOT...

I have my pride and honor too. What I have created so far is giving me great joy and pleasure, and I will finish the guide. There are however other things in my life besides XBMC that have been eating away all of my time right now.

I will finish the guide, and will do so in the same language, style and manner as I have written the parts that are finished so far.
After I have finished it the sources will be made available for the XBMC developers so that they can "latex" it to their likings. But I do not wish to see this manual to become a community project."

So - no. I will start it from scratch then, maybe take some hints Wink

I guess you're free to do what you want but it seems, to me anyway, a bit of a misuse of time - unless there is something wrong with the other person's guide.

Perhaps concentrate on parts he hasn't done.

I think the developers would really like someone to update the wiki - which you seem willing to do. That seems like a good use of time.

As far as the pdf guide goes I skimmed over it but something a forum poster in the other thread said that seemed like a good idea and applies to yours also:
Call it a Dharma guide (as opposed to the ultimate guide) so when a new release comes out people know the manual may not reflect that release properly.

Good luck with your endeavors!

Great work. I applaud the effort!

I strongly encourage you to open it up now - using google docs is fine - it could be invite-only should you be worried about others messing with it when they shouldn't be.

It would pay to decide on a license early as well - eg it could simply be the public domain or under one of the creative-commons ones.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Google Docs limits the file-upload to 1MB which is a shame since the high-res pictures take up a loot of place. Also I set a Creative Common License in order to create a reliable license for the usage, more details in the document.

Actually, I had a change of heart. (Apologies I've only just just read through the thread that i linked you to, very strange)

You seem committed to an open document (nice license) and the formatting seems nice.

I would like to volunteer myself to write a little section on nfo's:
Something like "How to influence media library through nfo files"
(e.g. for new users when the wrong film keeps coming up this would be a simple solution)

I don't know why the wiki needs updating, I was just reiterating things I here on here frequently.

And if you want to you can add the following for mac users installing:

"Download the current mac version my clicking on the version you require (depending on your computers processor). Once downloaded open the file (dmg) and drag XBMC to your application folder as usual. You do not need to keep the dmg after installation"

Everything else is the same.

I thought the same while reading the thread you linked to, glad that you wnat to join. A section about NFOs would be great - I need to make a special section for the library anyway as there are a lot more things I didnt mention. I'll continue towrite it tomorrow, expect an update.

Nice, i'm a bit busy with work at the moment but want to get the NFO section finished in a few days.
Aim is to keep it relevant, concise and well worded.
Keep up the good work, hopefully this may get official endorsement

jmarshall already commented - I hope it gets more attention though Wink

If a mod is around: Would love to see this thread in the How-To-Section.

On a side note: I am currently applying for a new job, so it could be a little bit - uhm - "unstructured" the next few weeks.
I'll update as soon as possible.

In the meantime: Feel free to either download the DOC-File and make some changes to it, but I also suggest you pitch your changes back to me, so that I can apply them for everyone. Or you could register for Thinkfree and I'll let you join, so we can work in a collaborated manner. A PM is sufficent.

Hi Hendry,

Bit later than planned:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XBMC scraper will automatically scrape information based on queries using the filename,
however sometimes it may incorrectly scrape information. Small XML based NFO files are
a way of influencing the scraper for a file or group of files.

A simple example:
File:
“D.A.R.Y.L (1985).avi”
Scans into the xbmc library as:
“Droids”
Even though the file is named as it is on IMDB it is not found.

To remedy a small nfo can be made:
Using a simple text editor (e.g. notepad on Windows, textedit on Mac),
make sure the file is “plain text” there is usual an option to do this in the menus.
The following is typed in

Code:
<xml>
<title>D.A.R.Y.L.</title>
http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/16248
</xml>

the resulting file is saved in the same folder as the movie.nfo, so in this case:
As the movie is called “D.A.R.Y.L (1985).avi”
The nfo should be saved as “D.A.R.Y.L (1985).nfo”

Another example is grouping movies in a set.
For example:
• Die Hard
• Die Hard 2
• Die Hard With a Vengeance
• Live Free or Die Hard
These films are all part of the Die hard quadrilogy, however as “Live Free or Die Hard” begins with
an “L” not a “D” it may not be found near the others. We can group them into a movie set using nfo
files for each film
Code:
<xml>
<movie>
<title>Die Hard</title>                (Title of the movie)
<set>Die Hard Collection</set>        (Set name to which it belongs)
<sorttitle>Die Hard 1</sorttitle>           (Title within the set)
</movie>
http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/562
</xml>

nfo’s can influence many aspects of XBMC’s library. For more information visit the wiki:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Imp...g_XML_data

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll leave the formatting up to you, I may take you up on your collaboration offer but i'll PM you when I decide.
Cheers
