ATV2 Crashes with any MKV
#1
Question
Hi. I finally got XBMC installed on my ATV2 today (via Seas0nPass and nitoTV installer). Standard Def AVI files work without a problem but every MKV crashes to the ATV main menu when I try to view the video. When I move the selection to the MKV file, XBMC will render a still image from the file after 2-3 seconds, but if I press to play the file the screen will go black for 4-6 seconds and then I'll find myself back at the main ATV menu.

Maybe I missed a step along the way? I followed the procedure outlined below to get nitoTV installed after the Seas0nPass jailbreak:

Quote:1. Jailbreak Apple TV 2G using Seas0nPass

2. After jailbreak, connect your Apple TV 2G to your Mac OS X and SSH into it using the Terminal app.

3. Use root@ip-address as username and ‘alpine’ as password. You can find out your device’s IP address from Settings –> WiFi –> ‘Name of your Network’.

We recommend you to change your password immediately using the ‘passwd’ command. Type passwd ‘new password’.

4. Add the source repository for NitoTV. Type this one after the other:

echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list

apt-get update

apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV

killall Lowtide

5. Restart your Apple TV 2G.

So there you go! You have successfully got your first jailbreak app for ATV 2G.

Once I did that, I simply installed XBMC from the nitoTV menu.

Apologies if this is common and has been answered before. I did a quick search but didn't find anything pertaining to my issue.

You're most likely running 4.3.1, which the official stable build does not support for hardware acceleration.

You can learn how-to update to nightlies (by learning how apt-get, wget, dpkg, etc work in jailbroken land) or just wait until an official build comes out that supports 4.3.1.

Ah ok. Thanks! I'll check out a tutorial on how to grab a nightly build then. Smile

I read this FAQ: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=93033

But I didn't see anything about the program crashing with MKV files while it plays divx/xvid files just fine. Did I miss that section?

You're right. I didn't read that. Unfortunately I didn't equate 'hardware acceleration' with the issue I was having and when I did my search, I searched specifically for 'xbmc crash mkv' as even standard def MKV files aren't playing.
