[AppleTV1] 1080p stutters
#1
I have installed :
Launcher 3.2.5
XBMC 10.1 Git e9e9099 Mar 9, 2011
CrystalHD driver r174
Broadcom Crystal HD BCM70015
on my ATV1

Playback of 720p files is very nice. 1080p files in m2ts, ts or mkv containers (H264 Profile [email protected] 1920:10880p Frame rate:23.976) play poorly with much stuttering and frequent dropped frames. I seem to get 18fps with 95-98%cpu.
The crystal HD is enabled. I have tried changing most every setting I can find.

The same 1080p files play well if I run the ATV as a linux environment. Very smooth, good video and audio. Files also run well on my iMac.

I would rather run in the osx environment to preserve the apple tv functions.

XBMC also hangs when I exit after attempting to play a 1080p. Exit after 720p file playback is normal.

xbmc log at:
http://pastebin.com/bHYyC8nf

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your efforts

OSX wont do more than 720p. Linux will. So you can either have pretty GUI or pretty movies...

I have the output set at 720p. The files are 1080p. I was under the impression that adding the crystalhd would allow these files to be played in the atv environment.
Not true?

No, not true.

However, adding the card AND running linux on the ATV will get you 1080p. It's very easy to do as of about a week ago.

Thanks, I did that and you are right it works great in linux. Problem is you lose the apple tv functions and menu that are preserved with the mac osx version. I would like to preserve the apple tv as well as add xbmc and the ability to read 1080p files (even if output at 720p is required).

Threads such as this led me to believe that it was possible:

Oh, well. Another failed, but fun experiment.

What OSX functionality do you wish you had in linux?

I like the integration with iTunes for music playback, genius playlists, etc.
Most of all I like the integration with iPhoto. I love the screen saver that floats my thousands of photos on the tv screen while I listen to music.

Renting and streaming videos from the itunes store is redundant to the rentals I can get from the cable company so I would not miss that.

It seems a better option for me would be to add a inexpensive wd tv live to accomplish the video streaming and keep the atv functions intact.

have you had a look at the plugins for XBMC? I was able to quickly able to find this one for iPhoto, and I'm betting there's one for iTunes too. I'm just supposed to be 'working' right now and need to get to it.

Since you like projects, you could also check out the lifehacker articles on building a hackintosh, then install XBMC for video and use frontrow for the iTunes and iPhoto bits.
