Building a NAS - Help Please!
#1
Alright, I'm looking at building a NAS for my storage solutions. I'm looking at building an unRAID setup, but I'm new to the whole RAID situations.

Right now I have ~1.5tb of actual movies in my system.... IF I setup unRAID, with: 4.5 TB worth of HD, how much storage would I ACTUALLY have in the end?

Here's what I'm thinking for a setup, let me know any thoughts or suggestions please!

1.AZZA Helios 910 Black Japanese SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
2. AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Processor SDX140HBGQBOX
3. Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model KVR800D2N6/2G
4. CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 CMPSU-430CX 430W ATX12V Active PFC Power Supply
5. COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP 4-in-3 Device Module Hardisk Cage
6. BIOSTAR A760G M2+ SOCKET AM2+/AM3 MOTHERBOARD AMD CHIPS

With unraid you loose your largest drive.
I.E. you have 3 2TB drives you get 4 TB of space, add another and you get 6 TB
or if you have different sizes like a 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB drives, you would loose 2 tb and have 1.75 tb of space, make sense?

Yes thanks a lot...any thoughts on the hardware?

Your hardware looks good to me, BUT I am no expert, I would highly recommend looking at Raj's Prototype Builds he has made some very nice lists of possible build:
http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7998.0

also if you want a full featured build already made and ready to go I would recommend this site:
http://www.queegtech.com/

they are more expensive than making it yourself but they are professionally made and guaranteed to work.

Awesome link thanks! I based mine upon the "budget build" that they had listed, but this has a lot more...thanks

Your hardware looks good overall, but i would consider a bigger PSU. I don't know how many hard drives you're planning to support eventually, but the biggest 'issue' with systems with lots of drives is not having enough power available.

Thanks...according to the forums on unRAID:
CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 CMPSU-430CX 430W
- 28A, supports up to 12 green drives or 7 7200 rpm drives
- recommended for small servers, 10 drives or less

As of right now, I don't think I will exceed 10 drives. BUT it might be something to consider for the future...

Maybe worth it to upgrade now, or wait....

I'll have to think about it. Thanks for the advice!
