Using FFDShow with XBMC
#1
Hey guys,

I am running the latest XBMC in windows 7, i have found that avi playback is not as good as it can be compared to some of my other systems.

I have read that FFdshow can be used to increase the sharpness etc, i have seen a guide on here. It was slightly advanced i am a beginner for this sort of stuff.

I have installed FFDshow on the HTPC, can someone help me with increasing quality of xvid / divx / avi playback on my HTPC.

Also i have seen after minimizing the window (XBMC) then coming back to it, the video playback stutters alot, but if i stop the video and go back to the main menu and restart it, it is fine.

System:

AMD Atlhon 64 x 2 4400+ 2.3ghz
ATI HD5450 512mb using hdmi out (using res 1360 x 768 as 1366 was not available for use

Asus m2a-VM
4gb Ram

older 50" plasma res of 1366x 768

Thanks in advance

Work, i do not have DS player, will the rest of the settings still work to improve the picture?

Will FFDshow go to work as soon as xbmc is started?

No, DSPlayer (Now DSCodec) basically uses DirectShow filters to decode and process the audio and video in XBMC, so the FFDshow filters and settings can only be used if you're using DSPlayer/DSCodec.

More information here, it's EXACTLY what you want.

To be honest, you're probably gonna find that the sharpness and other post-processing filters in FFDShow to be fairly lack luster. There really is no form of automatic post processing that improves one area of image quality without detracting from another. For example, often sharpness is achived by increasing overall grain.

Is it not worth the hassle then?

Would the grain be overly visible?

Honestly, I find XBMC does a very good job at upscaling SD material. Just be sure to set the upscaling method to Lanczos3 optimized and to enable postprocessing for HD material.

You could also try setting <highqualityscaling>1</highqualityscaling> in your advancedsettings.xml. I do not know if this method is still actual though.

Where is the Lanczos3 option? And post processing?
