Whatsup!

So im getting ready to do my first XBMC setup for my own home media center. Im going to use XBMC because... well it just seems like the best option.

Im a linux systems engineer, so im pretty damn good with software, I just dont usually do the hardware bit, Lets leave that bit to the NOC ;-)

Im going to install ubuntu 9.04 because that seems to be the most popular, the pandora plugin only works on there (according to my research), unless you can tell me it works on 10.x or 11.x. I got that info from here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=70471

Now it looks like streaming from a NAS is pretty straight forward, for music and videos, so no worries about that, but I do also want to stream Cable TV to it as well, and use multiple Capture Cards. This is where I have a few questions....

1) I see that the MythTV is whats used for DVR, (http://www.mythtv.org/), IM supposing that gets installed on the same server as the XBMC? Or should that go on a different server all together, Id like to have 2 or 3 capture cards.

2) Also, I know I can use the Logitech bluetooth keyboard, but id like to use a real IR remote as well, (more friendly for visitors). After some googling, I see most people use the Hauppauge PVR-150 remote (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Hauppauge_PVR-150), which seems to be compatible? That does include a remote, but would the remote also allow you to control everything else? Play music, select videos, etc etc,.... I just want to make sure its 100% compatible.

Thanks!
as far as a remote, if your get your hands on an MCE remote, you can use lirc to set it up as a microsoft remote and you should be good to go.
You mean like one of these?: http://www.amazon.com/Pinnacle-Remote-Wi...B000WR2E00

Is that compatible with this?

Hmmm I might give that a go
And is this a good case for it?

See http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews for known remotes. You're looking for an eHome or RC6 remote. I've never used the remote you mention and I don't know if it's an eHome remote.

Do these remotes come with the receivers as well?

Sorry, just never dealt with these, or the boxes themselves, so im trying to find one that will hold a video card, graphics card, and the RC receiver (if need be)
Some of the remotes come with a receiver so you will have to check when you buy one.

As for the system, I think the ideal solution consists of a file server plus a separate low power system with hardware decoding used for playback. With that setup you can have a small box connected to the tv that blends in with your other components, rather than a big ugly tower which is what you will need on order to do what you want. Something like thee acer revo is a great playback device. I personally use an apple tv 2 but that may bed too limiting for some.

This setup may cost more than you're willing to spend but out provides the most flexibility.

For the sever you can use just about anything as long as it meets your needs. As a basic file sever you need very little power, but I have no experience with myth tv or recording video so you may need a fair amount of power for that. Someone work experience in that area can help.
I was looking at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av6cpxwHTW4

You think he has a completely separate box?
I'm guessing he has everything in one box with that setup. I'm not sure how beyond tv works, it may need to run on the playback system. You mentioned using myth tv, which runs in a client server setup so the back end can run on the sever with the front end on the playback device.

I just prefer the flexibility with the two system setup but for some people the all in one is a better option
