trailers worked earlier this morning. however now they don't. the only thing I did in this time was use EMM to sort out my movie tagging etc.

could EMM have somehow affected the trailer progress?

I had the same problem with XBMC 10.1 and Ember Media Manager 1.2

Ember Media Manager writes Trailer-URLs into the NFOs but XBMC cannot play them. Delete the URLs and XBMC will use the local trailers again.
