I'm using pin78's crystalbuntu and wants to try an unofficial xbmc update
(i think they are called nighty realeases)

Can someone tell me how to update xbmc?

normally i do a
sudo apt-get remove xbmc-live
and then
sudo apt-get install xbmc-live

, but this seems to work only with official releases..

thanks in advance !

Unfortunately you can't. XBMC have dropped ppa support for hardy so the only way to run a newer build after 10.1 Dharma is to compile your own.

How can i do that? Any faq?
This is probably a good place to start https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/master/README.linux . You may find its not quite that simple though because some of the dependancies included with hardy are missing or out dated so you have to download the source packages and install for both the build and on the atv. I had a minimal install on the atv for about twelve months and I was compiling nightlys for myself but stopped a few months ago when crystalbuntu was released because its so much easier. The disro is constantly updated and tweaked and I think as time goes on hardy will just become more of a pita as new features are implemented and dependancies aren't met.
I am compiling nightlies for use with my latest image. If you have all run-deps you can use them:

Stay with my image then? It offers nightlies now with PVR
