Full Version: how do i user a remote server as media DB

Is it possible with XBMC to do following if so any suggestion with tools in doing so

Location A: Computer/NAS with internet connection with different IP adress than Location B
Location B: Computer with XBMC installaled withInternet location with different IP adress than Location A
Location : Computer with XBMC installaled withInternet location with different IP adress than Location A and B


Location A have all the movies/picture/music stored.

Location B have XBMC as playback device connected to TV and internet

Location C have XBMC as playback device connected to TV and internet

senario is that i want to be able to play movies from Location A to Location B and C that . nor of hte location are ont the same netowrk or IP but have connection to the internet.

is this possible?
Yes and no
Yes: if ports are opened to allow for your protocol to work (example port 21 for FTP)
No: if your speed between point a&b or a&c is too slow (example 700 Meg file is a 1hour movie, but it takes 1.5 hours to copy this file from point a to point b. How can you watch a 1 hour movie if it takes 1.5 hours to arriveHuh)

but dosen+t the buffering fix those issue. or does the client copy the file localy from point a to b before play. thinkig of a streaming solution like icefilms or veetle.com
Buffering does not fix this issue. Buffering only helps if there's fluctuations in network speed, e.g. the speed drops below the speed that is required to deliver each movie frame in time.
As atari800 pointed out you can't watch a 1,5h movie that takes >1,5h to download, not without stopping to buffer once in a while at least.
