I am relatively new to all of this, so my question is this.

Upon downloading and unpacking the latest nightly, is it ok to delete the .deb file to save space on the atv2, thereby only leaving the xbmc.frappliance folder?

thanks in advance :-)

yes
consider the .deb file an install file, once installed its no longer needed
much like a .zip or rar then.
