A quick look through the linux forums full of posts about having difficult with tearing, remotes, etc... shows that linux versions do matter...

I've had no problems with Maverick....
previously has worked fine on Karmic, Lucid, Hardy, etc....
....I personally hated Natty. Had problems with tearing, getting xbmc to stay full screen, etc.... so went back to Maverick.

That's because Ubuntu is that kid you knew that needed to wear the helmet all the time.
Install Debian if you want to go with an apt based OS.
Gentoo if you like compiling everything.
