Do you think it would be possible to overlay a skin on top of a video loop? I feel like it would be a great step forward into a good looking UI, The video loops can be simple and seemless if edited correctly, I feel like animated gifs are a good example, but if you can throw it into a video loop at 1080p, That would be some slick interface.

It would be good for theming, weather fan art, and more fanart options. Would this be possible with an existing skin with some script work?

I know these are gifs, but just picture these with a 1080p res as a background to your home screen pictures:

+1 ... great idea!!
Check out Cirrus Extended. They have limited support for this.
Are these gifs available in 1080p?

Wouldn't videos be better than using a gif?

edit: I did some digging and couldn't find them in a larger size, but I'll post where I found them here. People are calling them living movie stills or cinemagraphs.

If you want it as backgrounds gifs are far better. They are supported by XBMC and you can listen to music without killing the background. I saw some how-to's to make these, but by the looks of it it's a time consuming process.
APNG format would be better.

Yes it does. But that is okay, the look of that final image (Blade Runner), I would definitely be down to do some of these. I think it would be interesting to see if this would be possible with fanart replacements. Then again, I'm not sure what the file size is for one of these images, but it would definitely be fun to try.
I think Rocky5 is right. i did not realize gifs have 8bit limitation. That would look awful on 1080p and is probably the reason that site has only small gifs.
Great idea! Would love to see this in the future!
