Quote:a full six percent of North American households have a Kodi device...
Wow, that is impressive if true. Makes me wonder again, why none of the big players like Google, Amazon, Netflix or whatever has embraced Kodi yet to make use of that user base by providing addons for their services themselves.

How very wrong formulated this article is.
"Rather than give up their work, or submit to what they saw as XBMC's onerous guidelines, a group of XBMC developers instead formed XBMC Hub, a place where people were free to tinker on whatever addons they liked without worry of restrictions or reprisal."
"Like any open-source ecosystem, Kodi contains multitudes. There's the Kodi media player itself. There's TV Addons and other developer communities. There are the plugins that scrape the internet for pirated material. "
"Those are what transformed Kodi into the modern-day pirate's favorite ship."
"Meanwhile, in Canada, copyright holders have chosen to target TV Addons, the XBMC developer spinoff community"
No "XBMC developers" formed XBMC Hub. Some piracy addon developers XBMC Hub. Those piracy addon developers have not contributed nothing to XBMC's core code so can not be called "XBMC developers". And IIRC most if not all addons on XBMC Hub was piracy related. It goes on to say that TV Addons and others is part of Kodi's open-source ecosystem. All and all the article make it sound as if the people behind XBMC/Kodi and "XBMC Hub" have an official connection, like an official spinoff. That makes it a poorly written article IMHO.

“This seems like another attack against the addons that made Kodi popular in the first place,” wrote TVAddons. “As abusive lawsuits have began to plague the unofficial Kodi community, we’ve noticed an alarming trend in official Kodi developers attacking the unofficial addon community, within the official Kodi forums as well as over social media.
“Many of these attacks are unwarranted considering the fact that once upon a time Kodi itself was home to many of the addons which they now claim to hate.”
It added: “We strongly believe that end users should always have the right to choose, otherwise what’s the point?”
Its more than that though... The "spyware" Add-on in question, blocked legitimate 3rd party repositories and thousands of non-piracy related Add-ons. My independent repository, that has never hosted a piracy Add-on, included.
Utter stupidity, poor sledge hammer approach that goes against everything Open-Source software is about. I.E. Building on each others work.
The team should concentrate on educating users (though code or warnings, if needed). To stop these ridiculous attempts at controlling or abusing the ecosystem popping up.
Improvements also need to be made to the Add-on rules (so that more people are able to submit to the official repo) and the Add-on submission process (to lower the difficulty of actually getting them on the official repo).
Bring those 2 things together and people won't need to use other Repo's in the first place, and a clear line can be drawn.
EDIT: had some other ideas:
- Verified Kodi badge for non-piracy Add-ons
- List of independent repo's that do not include piracy Add-ons but are seperate from the XBMC ogranization
- Code of conduct for Add-on developers
- Some kind of warning when Kodi launches that it has 3rd party repo's installed and who they are

This had absolutely nothing to do with the Team, in fact it adversely affected some Team members as well since their addon repo's were also included, the Caretaker script originated with the kodinerds devs and used a list produced by them. Action has now been taken to make sure any addon with an open support thread on this forum does not include the Caretaker script.
In the past the Team view has always been that users systems are theirs to do with as they wish and we should not inhibit them from doing whatever they want, the only consequence of doing what they want is that if may disqualify them from getting support on the forum if it is piracy related. However we also recognise there are legitimate concerns by addon devs that led to them including this Caretaker script so discussions are now underway internally of whether we allow something like Caretaker as long as it operates to a strict set of criteria, or we are completely against anything like this at all.

Yeh I realize that, I was more ranting at the fact it popped up.
I think there are things the team can do to prevent other users taking things into their own hands, that would be far less controversial and actual useful for the education of users in what is a good and bad repository.

This recent situation has arisen because authors of legitimate addons are seeing their addons included within fully loaded boxes and being used to promote them along with all the piracy stuff, now that addon authors are being taken to court some are now worried by the legal consequences of this even though their own work is perfectly ok, anyway this is probably getting off topic for here.

The Telegraph has a screaming "KODI BOXES COULD KILL THEIR OWNERS" headline, which would be far better stating "any dirt-cheap shoddy electrical devices pose fire risks."

That's the independent which isn't even a newspaper any more, just another tabloid online job. Their headlines are just click-bate these days.

I have real issue with this as it shows the Flirc case with kodi logo on it, which makes it look like it’s that case being recalled, couldn’t find a page to contact as this is misrepresentation of both kodi and flirc, hopefully someone from Team Kodi can point them in the right direction 👿
