is there a script i can run say when xbmc closes down to backup my music and video library to my server so that if something does go wrong i can restore them?

I use Acronis True Backup and schedule it to back up my library to a server every night. Might be the easiest way.

So you have that running on your server? If the media player isnt on it just skips it and does it next time its on?

Yeah, I run it on the server.
My HTPC is always on, so I'm not sure what happens if the client is not available. My guess is it just waits until the next day to do the back up.
You could get around that by scheduling the task to run every hour, or by installing Acronis on the client itself (if its windows), in which case if the HTPC wasn't on at the appropriate time, it would run the next time it started.
