Apparently since the LIRC modules were merged into the kernel recently, one no longer needs LIRC, but it can be used if you don't want to configure anything. I never got LIRC to work so I just removed it and went with ir-keytable which is pretty much it's replacement. It's pretty dense but this is what I've been following so that I can completely customize my remote: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=104541
