Full Version: Wireless after install Eden?

I have one of the new(ish) Veriton N acer boxes (like revo)

originally I only needed wired connection so i opened up the box and unhooked the wireless network card prior to installation to keep things simple.

but my needs have changed and i need to use wireless now, but my ubuntu knowledge is limited at best.

I have tried a few different suggestions in post on this forum but they are all vastly different and none have got me much success. the closest i have got is a configured wireless card that cant find any networks?

my questions is will a fresh install of Eden with the wireless card plugged in change the simplicity of the setup or does ubuntu not play well will novice users when it comes to wireless

Thanks,
aPeg
It depends, if your network card is supported by ubuntu without additional drivers it is pretty easy. If not you have to install the drivers. (same as on windows really, except that you don't get a cd with the drivers on).

The easiest way to find out if ubuntu has the drivers is to boot a standard ubuntu desktop cd and see if it works.
xbmcbuntu is based on Ubuntu 11.10. If a 11.10 live cd works with the card so should xbmcbuntu.

If you unplug the wire before installing xbmcbuntu you will be asked to connect to the wireless already in the installer.
If you do this wifi will then already be configured and available when you are done.

You can then install the network manager add-on for easy access from within the xbmc gui.
@ what point will i be promoted for the wifi setup on install?

I have booted the install with the wire unplugged and i just get the red dot saying no connection, i dont get promoted for connecting to a wireless network.

does that mean my wireless card does not have drivers in ubuntu and have to do i the hard way? or is the wireless prompt latest on during the install? (i know i can find out by doing a full install but I would hate to wipe out my current install if im not 100% sure it will get the wifi card working)

Thanks,

You should get it at that point, or possibly the next not 100% sure but it is in the beginning.

If it does not work an idea could be to try with Ubtuntu 12.04.
Sadly I am too stupid to install XBMC over ubuntu 12.04 myself (i always run into something), the only reason I get as far as I do is because of these nice pre-built ISO's the XBMC folks are nice enough to prepare.

Ill take the install as far as i can without wiping the original install and see if i can get to the wireless section, if i get there ill just do the reinstall.

Thanks Vikjon, I appreciate the help!

Cheers,
aPeg
What wifi chipset do you have? Are you trying the built-in wifi? If so please post the output of in a terminal:

Code:
lspci -nn

If it's a USB dongle then post output of:

Code:
lsusb

Its and internal built-in wifi card but on the original install i had it unplugged, only yesterday did i put it back in.
Yeah, I meant to say that it can be fixed with some work. I am not the expert on that though.
EDIT: upps, better leave that to the experts
In a nut shell:

- it will take me 2-3 hours to run an RJ45 to my XBMC.
- a fresh install will take me < than an hour (skins and settings)

Whatever will get me running in the least amount of time is what ill do, but what I don't want to do is re-install XBMC only to find out my wifi card still wont work, spend my night troubleshooting only to give up and run the wire anyway (like most of my ubuntu troubleshooting haha)
