hi I've just installed xbmc for the first time on iPad 2. i was playing with the settings in video calibration and now my screen is out of line and i can't seem to get it back in line. is there a way to set back to default settings?

You can use SSH and the rm command, or use
Cyberduck (wiki), to delete the guisettings.xml file. That will reset those settings.

Oh, and you can also use something like iFile from Cydia (if this happens again). I keep forgetting that the iDevices have GUI file managers, while the ATV2 doesn't.
