I have a couple of rips DVD's which are just .avis's containing 3-4 epis which I would have ripped years ago. This leaves a folder heirachy like so - Videos/TV series/Series/Series Season 1 DVD 1.avi, Series Season 1 DVD 2.avi, Series Season 1 DVD 3.avi etc. I am not bothered about retaining induvidual episodes I would just like to be able to view them in the TV Shows section of XBMC. I tried renaming them to Series S01E01.avi, Series S01E02.avi etc but I guess becouse that doen't match TheTVDB when i scrape XBMC just ignore them.

Any advice?

You can try:

Series.S01E01_02_03_04.avi or
Series.S01E01020304.avi or
Series - S01E01_02.avi etc....

Then the library will pick up all the episodes correctly, but you'll have to mess with <epbookmark> tags in the .nfo to get xbmc to start at the point at which those episodes should start. I can't help you with <epbookmarks> though. I'm still trying to get help on those myself.
