I'm thinking about buying an ATV1 and installing a Broadcom card in it so that XBMC will be able to use hardware acceleration. But, I also want access to a couple of the apple provided channels. I've read around here and the broader internet and I see that there are a couple of different ways to install XBMC on the ATV. But, I can't piece together a clear picture of which leave which apple services in place. So I thought I would just ask the direct question.

Here is the intersection I'm looking for:
XBMC (with HD playback)
Netflix
Hulu
NHL Center Ice

The last three are apple channels and are from varying releases of the ATV OS.

I hope one of the users around here will be able to help.

Thanks.
I have an ATV1. If you want to keep the standard AppleTV software in addition to XBMC, you can install "Launcher" which will make XBMC show up as another app in the AppleTV menu (Along with Movies, Podcasts, YouTube, etc).

It's been a few years since I did this on my ATV, but from memory you use atvusb-creator to create a USB stick that will install XBMC onto your ATV: http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

(This is on the XBMC wiki too: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...Apple_TV_1 )

However - my ATV1 Does not have Netflix, Hulu or NHL Center Ice. I'm pretty sure these features were never made available by Apple on the ATV1 (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_TV).

If you really want Netflix, you could try it via the XBMC plugin (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add...x_for_XBMC) or else consider getting an ATV2, which I believe is jailbreakable and then allows installation of XBMC (but I'm not sure if any more recent software updates have prevented jailbreaking).
Netflix is still a no-go for ATV1 (freakin' netflix not at least making a linux client that doesn't need silverlight....). Hulu can easily be had with the XBMC add-on: Add-on:Hulu (wiki).

ATV2, if you can find one, will give you XBMC, HD playback for most videos (probably 90%. H.264 videos only), Hulu (Hulu Plus in ATV2 interface or the Hulu XBMC add-on), Netflix (via ATV2 interface). ATV3 can't be jailbroken yet, so don't get one of those

However, you might want to look at getting a Pivos XIOS DS, running either Android or Linux. It's still in development right now, but will give you everything the ATV2 can do and more (more video codecs, more internal memory, USB support, etc). It only costs $115, and is easier to find than an ATV2 at that price (due to the fact that only the ATV2 can be jailbroken, the price on it has gone way up).

Thanks gen0. I should have mentioned that I've actually unlocked an ATV2 for a friend so I've been through the path in the wiki. The info on the atv1 apps is a big help.

Yeah, I'm watching the development of xbmc on both the Pivos & rasberry PI.

One of these could be a homerun.

Thanks.
