Full Version: HOW-TO: Automated efficient XBMC install - Ubuntu 12.10/13.04 mini based

I've had some difficulties with the 13.04 upgrade - it ran successfully, but afterwards, neither X nor xbmc start up, it just stays at the XBMC loading screen.

If I SSH in to the box and run xinit, X starts up, but not xbmc - running xbmc in the xterm that X starts with does start up xbmc though.

So the individual bits all appear to be working, but the startup isn't - I am not sure how to investigate - any suggestions ?

Edit : Never mind - running the 2.6.1 script and choosing upstart instead of init appears to have fixed it.
Another question, hope im not bothering anyone.
How do i open up the terminal without having to use another computer and SSH in? i tried to exit xbmc but it just showed a black screen. then i googled and found out i could press CTRL+ALT+F2 but it also just showed black.
john.doe, you should be able to get to a login prompt with ctl-alt-f1-9; it will be mostly black, with a login prompt. What are you expecting? n.b. The actual number of virtual terminals varies from distro.
I already tried all the ctrl-alt-f# keys. And theres no login box. just a black screen.
Aside for getting a terminal without SSH, what is it you're actually trying to do?
I installed ubuntu mini 13.04. Everything went good until I entered a terminal session. Now xbmc starts and i see the logo, but then it goes to a text login screen. Anyone else had this problem?

That happens to me sometimes. I have to switch virtual terminals with ctl-alt-f1-9 .. usually 1, 7, 8 or 9 will then load XBMC. I hope that helps.
I used the script for ubuntu 12.04 and loved it. But I'm haveing some difficulties with Ubuntu 13.04.2.6 script didn't really work to great for me, But 2.6.1 got xbmc to show on my tv. Everytime I restart my system, I have to switch to tty8 to see XBMC. Easy enough to do right now, but my sound card isn't recognized. I run aplay -l and I can see it. When I run alsamixer the only card available is my hdmi on my video card. I want to use my onboard video output because my receiver doesn't have hdmi.
some help please would be apreciated.

Is the onboard soundcard enabled in the BIOS?

Boot from grub (either interrupt the boot process or create a media with it on), and boot the system in single user?
Hi Bram77,

Just read this thread, and I followed the instructions but something went wrong, can you please guide me. I installed Ubuntu 13 64bit minimal and then downloaded the script https://github.com/Bram77/xbmc-ubuntu-mi...all_2_6.sh then I've executed it, on screen it was stuck on " Installing NVIDIA video drivers (may take a while)... " then I look at the logs so that I'am aware of what happening the log says:

root@xbmc:/home/xbmc# cat xbmc_installation.log

@coolmac what does happen when you use the command

Code:
sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current

@all
Better to use uNiversaI script:

Code:
cd ~
wget https://github.com/uNiversaI/xbmc-ubuntu-minimal/blob/master/12.04/prepinstall_2_6_2.sh
bash ./prepinstall_2_6_2.sh

Hi Morrtin,

When I run "sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current" something are mess up I have to run "apt-get update --fix-missing" to fix it, I have try to execute the prepinstall_2_6_2.sh but unfortunately it has an error

root@xbmc:/home/xbmc# wget https://github.com/uNiversaI/xbmc-ubuntu...l_2_6_2.sh

for now I will just wait for the nvidia-current to install and will try the automated script again. hopping it work.
