I Have the AppleTV 1 with eden installed. I'm using the Broadcom HD chip to enable me to play hd content from the atv hard drive.

When I've been watching some sd videos on the atv and start up a 720p content it sometimes gets jerky and the atv becomes unstable, doesn't respond too well to remote commands etc. If I then restart and play that same file again everything runs smoothly.

Here is a log file (the hd file is opened at line 1419):

As this is my first post please let me know if I need to provide more information or am posting in the wrong forum etc.
I have the same issue and have not found the solution to that yet. so, whenever I want to watch anything that's 720p or 1080p I just restart the ATV1 and I save myself a headache with jerkiness of the movie.

Other solution is to run CrystalBuntu w/ XBMC from USB drive or you could install it directly on the HDD. With either of this options your crystalHD card will work smoothly. But, if you do choose to install it on HDD you will end up eraseing the original apple OS from the HDD. Check out this link: http://stmlabs.com/projects/crystalhd-for-appletv/ and read through.
I am the other way around.. I get smooth playback on hd content however I get stuttering on sd content. weird.
