I am wondering whether there is or could be some cocktail of hardware, configuration, and XBMC software that would enable a user to operate an optical drive or card reader device that connects to an XMBC system without cables, but that offers the same range of features as though the device were part of the XBMC system.

The motivation for such a scenario is that a user may want the XBMC system to sit near or within a television unit, while wanting an optical drive or card reader (or other removable media device) would sit near the user, such as on a table beside the sofa. In such a scenario, the user would insert the removable media into the nearby device, and the XBMC system would be able to play or to write files on the media.

[Some technologies that might possibly contribute to a solution include Wireless USB and USB/IP (http://usbip.sourceforge.net/), but the latter case requires a dedicated system to host the media device.]

Just would have to have the XBMC device join the airstash's own wifi - you might have to add another NIC to your XBMC server, but that's easy to do.
You could just get an android phone/tablet with a USB card reader and share it out via that? Much cheaper solution and would be multi-functional as you could then use it as a remote.
