Is using Event Ghost the best solution for controlling xbmc w/ a tv remote? Is there a better solution? Does anyone have experience with this that could point me in the right direction?

Event ghost is the best tool for controlling xbmc using tv remote. You will need an IR receiver also. The HP MCE receiver works fine with eventghost. I have tried remotes of my Panasonic TV, Sherwood BDP, HD STB and they all work nicely with xbmc.
Another option is
Flirc (wiki). Haven't tried it myself, but you can search the forums for this term and you'll find a number of threads where actual users have commented on it.
