Hi all,
I am totally new to linux full stop and have just installed XBMCubuntu 11.0 on a media centre.
All looks great but…. how do I put things on to the hard drive.

Ive plugged a usb pen into the machine with films on and the media centre will see and play them but i still dont know how to move files on to the actual media centre’s hard drive.
The installation is fresh with no add-ons…

Any help given will be appreciated.
Welcome to Forums Smile

Use sftp.to connect to xbmcbuntu, you should use place files in there where they can be read by xbmc. Obviously files dont have to be in hdd where xbmc is, they can be in a storage device in a network for e.g

Then when you transferred the files see

In fact there's a lot of stuff on wiki if your new to Linux/xbmcbuntu, use the wiki search it use forums thers tons of info for beginners you just need to search.

Or simply choose Exit from the XBMC shutdown menu and log-in to the "XBMCbuntu" session (instead of "XBMC") using your defined username/password. This will display the XBMCbuntu desktop. You can then launch the file manager and drag-and-drop the files from your USB flashdrive to your system's hard drive (most likely to the "My Music", "My Movies", etc. folders, based on the content type of the files).
Further more if you can install some software for rdp to your XBMCbuntu machine so you can enjoy xbmc and be remotely connected to xbmcbuntu desktop at the same time.

Here is link to post I used to set this up: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=125729
Thanks guys.

Im just going to try exiting and logging in to XBMCbuntu session now.....

Regards.
XBMC has a integrated filemanager which is able to move/copy and do all sorts of file operations. it works pretty well.

You can very well do what artrafael said but using the xbmc filemanager.

settings (submenu) filemanager.

Just tried and it works fine - Thank you.

One more question though - when I'm in XBMCbuntu mode (not XBMC) How do I exit back into XBMCbuntu mode ?

Again Thank You.....
Logout or exit?

I'm assuming you'd meant to say exit from XBMCbuntu mode back to XBMC mode? If so, just reverse the above process:
Click Shutdown icon (bottom-right of desktop), select Log-out to display log-in window, enter username/password, select "XBMC" from the dropdown menu, click Log-in, XBMC application is launched.
exit was my only option - but i opened terminal and typed xbmc and woohoo im back in

Thanks for all you help guys
i couldnt see anything on the desktop but maybe thats because my TV isnt showing the full desktop (if that makes sence)

Probably an overscan issue and the taskbar dropped off the bottom of your TV display.
