Hey guys,

a few days ago, I installed XBMCBuntu 12 (Beta 3) on my main computer (Intel/Nvidia setup) and everything worked fine. So I decided to give it a try on my HTPC with the following specs:

AMD Phenom II X4
Asus M4A88TD-M/USB3 (AMD 880G chipset/HD4250 graphics)
Crucial M4 128 GB
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-HD-S2 (worked fine on my main PC)

The installation was already weird. I pressed "Install XBMCBuntu" and while the wizard was loading, it displayed errors about "KVM is disabled by bios" and "firmware could not be loaded".
After that, it loaded a live version of ubuntu where I had to start the installation manually using an icon.

After the installation, I got the same screen again (Ubuntu with graphical interface). XBMC was available as entry in the main menu, but refused to start (no error or something).

So I grabbed the logfiles:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18722486/logfiles.zip or as direct links: http://pastebin.com/b9R1eUxA

Is this an openGL/graphics driver issue? Is the integrated GPU suported at all or do I have to buy a dedicated nvidia graphics card?

Thanks in advance and regards,
fabs
the ATI driver in ubuntu 12.10, which is the base for xbmcbuntu, does not support your HD4250, thanks to AMD...

you need to add this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx and install fglrx-legacy

edit: to clarify, this is not xbmcbuntus fault, as you cannot have both drivers for new and older hardware installed at the same time. Again, thanks to AMD.
Alright, thanks for the fast answer. I will try to install the legacy driver tomorrow.

Does this affect hardware acceleration/VDPAU/XvBA for HD playback in any way? Is it still enabled?
its the only way to get hardware acceleration (Xvba) working, but for that you must also switch the Xbmc PPA. Remove the "team xbmc unstable[ ppa" first.
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:team-xbmc/unstable

then look here for settings and commands to run after the driver is installed:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=116996

You need to do step 2, 3 and 9
Just to be sure: First, I remove the "team xbmc unstable[ ppa" repository and then add "makson96/fglrx". Then I follow the tutorial in steps 2, 3 and 9. Right?
yes, but you must install fglrx-legacy instead of fglrx in step 2
So, I gave it a try. I wasn't able to remove the "team xbmc unstable[ ppa" since it wasn't found. After that, I installed fglrx-legacy by using the "makson96/fglrx" ppa but XBMC was still crashing.

xbmc@HTPC:/usr/lib/fglrx/bin$ sudo ./fglrxinfo
Error: unable to open display (null)

xbmc@HTPC:/usr/lib/fglrx/bin$ sudo ./aticonfig
Unable to open /etc/ati/control, please reinstall the driver.
./aticonfig: No supported adapters detected
i have the same motherboard and processor and plan to do a full install of the same so am following with interest - thanks guys
fabs, seems the driver is not installed correctly.

you might be better off going the manual way, see here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=116996
Do I have to add another repository here as well (for fglrx-legacy) or is it enough when I install the legacy version in step 2 of the tutorial?
if you go with ubuntu 12.04 then you don't need another repo, for 12.10(quantal) you do.
I went with the installation described here: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_...7s_site.29

After that, I installed a tested Git build of XBMC and TVHeadend. So far, the basic TV functions are working, so a big thanks to you for your help! Smile
I have some tearing issues though and a strange watermark with the AMD logo and the text "for testing only" in my bottom right corner. But I am sure that's fixable, too. Wink
you got the beta driver. download fglrx-legacy 12.6 final

about tearing: make sure you have V-Sync always on in Xbmc and "tearfree" Off in AmdCCC
