i've been trying to instal xbmc on my dads laptop but without success. He has windows vista (sp2) 32 bit, celeron processor with 2gig ram. I have tried xbmc 11 eden, 12 rc1 and rc2, but all with the same fails.
The install on all occassions seems to get as far as vcredist_x86.exe/q and just sit there without completing. I monitored the installation; setup extracted vcredist_x86.exe; then ran VS Redist, which failed.
Setup then executed vc2010\vcredist_x86.exe/q

I thought 1 time xbmc had installed, but the application run gave me an error - the application failed to start becuse its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. ive searched the board and found comments about directx and c++ but i thought xbmc would update these if neccessary

Sometimes updating the display drivers can help.

thanks for the reply and something i will look into, but i wouldn't have thought the display drivers would have stopped the installation completing.
I think its a windows problem rather than xbmc, since i have the same os on my laptop and xbmc is running sweet.
I shall have to look at microsoft site for directx and c++ updates, but as WiSo says, they're included in the installer

vcredist x86 is the one you need since XBMC is a 32bit application.

Would my best course of action to be to find the updates of these files, as 'itssuresh' states
