Hello,

Is it by any chance possible to have XBMC installed on some Set top box such as Dreambox, VU+ or AZBox?

They are all linux based, their UI is crappy so I would like to use theirs DVB-S2 features as backend and XBMC as frontend

The only logical way I can think of is installing Ubuntu on the box, so can I change the stock linux distribution of eg Dreambox to Ubuntu?

This might seem stupid to some but it would really be the ultimate setup for me.
I think these devices have a Mips chip, no opengl , probably no gpu at all.
I don't believe this would happen, more likely these devices would move to use an Arm SoC with proper gpu to support Android, and then there will be no problem running XBMC on them (with exception to video hardware decoding).
No you can't install xbmc on dreambox but you can use dreambox as backend.
