Full Version: XBMC on PPC (Tiger) crashes using TV Catchup Add-on

Hi

I have just installed XBMC 11.0 (Eden) and TV Catchup 2.0 EPG (2.1.26) to breathe new life into an original spec Mac Mini from 2005 .... it runs Tiger 10.4.11 on PPC.

The moment I click on any channels it says ' working' in the bottom right corner for about 1 second and then crashes.

(I installed the same software, albeit Intel version of XBMC, on a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it works fine.)

Any idea what could be up regarding PPC?

BTW, I posted on the TV Catchup forum with the conclusion that: "It looks like an issue with XBMC itself".

See here, for TV Catchup forum post and more log info.

Many thanks in advance

Chris

PS - There is maybe nothing interesting in the xbmc.log though the last few lines are here:

Isn't the original spec Mac mini capable of running Leopard (10.5)? I just wonder if that will make a difference.
Yes, it is capable of running Leopard but it's also capable of running Tiger :-)

I downgraded to Tiger from Leopard as the latter made the Mac Mini significantly slower.
Hi

Is XBMC known to have problems with Tiger on PPC?

The Wiki suggests it works okay by saying:
Quote:XBMC v11 runs on Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) and later on both Intel and PPC Macs (G4 and above)
so I was expecting it to work on my setup.

(my DVD drive is broken anyway so I'm even more reluctant to devote time to try and install Leopard somehow).

thanks

Chris

Hi

I guess the answer to the problems lies in the fact that:

* XBMC 11 doesn't work on Tiger on PPC after all
* no-one really cares so much about PPC anymore (I think XBMC 12 doesn't even have a PPC version)
* no-one really cares about Tiger anymore

So I will have to try and upgrade my PPC to Leopard, hope for the best, otherwise give up ....

1. That's not true.
It's crashing with that addon, but have you tried another video?

2. That's kind of true :-)
PPC machines are getting really old.

I'm not sure upgrading to Leopard will help. It seems to be crashing in ffmpeg.
I think it doesn't like the video format you are trying to read.

Maybe it's time to upgrade hw :-)

Hi

Yes, it works with another video ... and I installed exactly the same software on my Intel MBP running Snow Leopard and it works fine.
So either it is an XBMC-Tiger problem or a XBMC-PPC problem ....

re: time to upgrade, I did already for my everyday Mac which is now a MBP ... that's the point. I'm trying to find a use for my old Mac Mini which would otherwise be gathering dust!!!!

Sadly, as I mentioned before, my DVD drive is broken so I can't upgrade to Leopard the easy way.

So I created a bootable USB stick and ... guess what ... a G4 PPC can't boot from USB.

So I am still none-the-wiser in knowing if an upgrade to Leopard will indeed fix the problem of ffmpeg crashing.
