Hi warrin, so many things could be the problem with buffering issues.
Is the file you are playing on a local hard drive, a network drive or from the internet?
If internet:
Do you have a fast enough internet line capable of streaming the content?
If network drive:
Are you on wi-fi? If so, plug in a lan cable and see if it makes a difference.
Update the drivers for your wifi and lan cards
If local drive:
Update your drivers in for your video card
