I understand i just ssh in and do the following

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo ppa-purge -r ppa:whatever-ppa-you-have-now
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:whatever-ppa-here
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc.bin

and that will upgrade me yeah? but where i get stick is the 2nd and third command, i dont know how to tell my ppa or how to put it in nor how or what to add on the third line, can you please assist a linux noob
If you're using XBMCbuntu and not XBMC installed on top of some other Ubuntu distro, then you don't want to upgrade via PPAs. Instead, burn the XBMCbuntu 12.0 ISO to a disc/card/stick/whatever and then boot it with the "Install XBMCbuntu" option. During the installation process, it will ask if you want to upgrade your existing installation; say yes, and it will do so.

I used this method yesterday, and it worked better than I expected. A couple of non-XBMC apps that I had installed will need to be reinstalled, and I had to re-do my custom sound configuration. Everything else worked fine out of the box.
thanks worked a treat
