I'm a newcomer to XBMC but not to Linux. I've just installed XBMCbuntu, and I'm having audio issues.

Playing DVDs and TV via the MythTV add-on works just fine, but anything else is silent - MP3s, audio CDs and streaming add-ons.

I'm pretty sure I enabled MP3 playback support during installation, and in any case the fact that audio CDs don't work makes me think that's not the problem.

speaker-test works fine too.

Googling hasn't turned up anything of use, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the debug log that's relevant.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Is it a sample rate problem?

Video tends to be 48000Hz, CD audio, and anything ripped from it is 44100 Hz.

Some soundcards in passthrough mode only support 48000Hz.

There is a setting in advancedsettings.xml that will help if this is the problem:

<resample>48000</resample>

Aha, that did the trick - perfect.

You, sir, are a true gentleman. Thank you kindly.
