Just today I noticed that WMC doesn't play live tv anymore. It sais another program might occupy the tuner. Actually I am not aware of any other program but what comes to my mind is that xbmc's pvr features might interfere (though I have not set them up .. but I installed them).

Just before I spend hours on troubleshooting .. is anyone aware of a problem like this.

Any heads-up greatly appreciated.

Did you install a PVR backend? XBMC on its own does not actually talk to TV tuner cards - so you'd have to install a backend such as ArgusTV - a completely separate download and installation to XBMC.

No .. I didn't install a backend .. I am aware that you need one .. but on the other hand I didn't know if xbmc does anything to the system.
