Hi wolfgar,
Tried a few things over the weekend, mainly compiling a distro for the quad.
I can´t get your xbmc binary for the wandboard to work.
I made it executable but it didn´t change anything.
Starts, black screen and back to console by pressing a key.
Tested everything on your latest image.
Another very annoying thing is that xbmc doesn´t show any audio devices, it selects the first in kernel detected alsa-device by default.
I tried to change asound.conf in every location i found it, but it seemed as if xbmc ignored everything related to alsa or audio in general.
Could only get output on spdif by completely disabling sgtl5000 in kernel.
Also sgtl5000 and spdif crackle like hell, xbmc slider below 25% helps, but dynamic range suffers greatly. Haven´t tried hdmi but i fear it might be the same.
Have a nice day

the forum doesn´t let my post the rest of the log, because it´s too long for one message.

Hi xn2000
Sorry for the last binary, it is likely that I have to upload the whole xbmc tree and not only the binary !
(as you work with a quite old release, it is likely that other libraries have to be updated)
I am working very hard to get a full working image for wandboard at the moment : I have an almost working image with kernel + GPU +vpu + firmware derived from fsl BSP v4.0.0
I am still trying to understand why the hell only a quarter of the DMA pages are available on boot (this is the real underlying reason why some allocations in XBMC fail : I have updated XBMC to require less physical memory but it only "hides" this real issue)
I have not yet fully tested the sound but be sure that I will also try to address the issues you report...
Regards
Stephan

From your last message I assume I would be best off trying to get xbmc running with the BSP 4.0.0 release on these boards too? But what about other required files / config / xbmc... Where to find what is required? Are you planning on a more generic release that should work off most i.mx6 boards, that don't necessarily includes the entire root fs? I'm more of a HW person btw so bare with me (currently in the process of finalizing a custom i.mx6 board)
Hi,
As I don't have these boards, I cannot test and check images for them but providing a RFS which is very similar for several boards (only uboot and kernel being specific) should not be so hard.
It is not my priority (obviously I cannot care for things I am unable to test) but I am available to support anyone who want to provide images or perform tests on these boards...

how do you guys find the fluidity of the build so far? What kind of skins have you tried? Anyone running Xperience1080..? (the only skin I've found with a decent and clean layout, perhaps also together with SiO2), how do they run?

Thanks for the tip, will do that next time.

Have you tried using the new 3.1.x Kernel branch ?

Okay thanks.
Sound and especially soundquality are very important to me. It´s the main reason i started looking into xbmc for i.mx6 in the first place.
My intention is to build an audiophile mediacenter based on xbmc.
Since the wandboard has a lot less frequency noise and power pollution than a full fledged x86 htpc but a quite powerful gpu, it is an ideal candidate.
Still looking for hard realtime kernel patches.
Have a nice day
Hi xn2000,
Work is going on : I have found the issue regarding DMA : This issue is present in every kernel releases for wandboard I am aware of.
At the end, the patch is very simple but I had a hard time to understand what was the root cause for so few pages available for DMA whereas the DMA zone was supposed to be 184MiB...
The patch is
here.
By the way, my kernel is a plain linux kernel : I took fsl kernel V4.0.0 and I cherry picked all patches applied by wandboard on the android kernel to get this result...
Now I can run the same xbmc as the one provided for gk802 without any troubles to allocate my physical buffers, video is decoded fine, GPU is OK (everything from fsm BSP v4.0.0)
As soon as I get working sound I will release a first image for wandboard.
Regards
Stephan
PS : When you speak about hard real time do you think about xenomai ?

I think the best would be to realize a video so that anyone can make his mind about the fluidity and usability of this build : I will try to do it when my first release for wandboard is ready...
Regarding Xperience1080, I have just given it a try and it seems to run pretty well (yet as I use a mouse as input for now, I have not tested it in details..)

Very nice , thanks for the patch.
Could you also post your custom Kernel? I would really like to test it.
No i was thinking of Ingo Molnars preemptive realtime patchset.
Although i think xenomai incorporates some of those.
Have a nice day
Hi xn2000
Here is the
uImage of my current kernel ...
I changed the following vars in uboot env :
set bootcmd "mmc dev 0; mmc read ${loadaddr} 0x800 0x1200; bootm"
set bootargs "console=ttymxc0,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootfstype=ext2 ro video=mxcfb0:dev=hdmi,1920x1080@60,if=BGR32 consoleblank=0 fbmem=28M,10M,10M"
Regarding preempt_rt patch, if it helps I should be able to provide a wandboard kernel with this patchset applied..
To come back to the sound in xbmc , I have the same issue as you : it works but It seems that the signal is too much amplified and saturated except if I set the volume quite low...
regards
Stephan
me again,
Regarding sound, HDMI seems to be OK with XBMC..
First image is very close
Unfortunately I have a stability issue since my last changes : it works great but I cannot play more than 20 minutes without a freeze. I will find...
I'll be back
@wolfgar: why do you reserve memory for fb1 and fb2 with the fbmem line?

Hi wolfgar,
thanks for the kernel. I tested it , boots up and everything gets initialized but it messes up gpu accelleration on my custom build.
On your yocto release xbmc exits with segmentation fault.
And in stock wandboard ubuntu release, it goes into fallback mode.

(2013-07-12, 09:19)hste Wrote: [ -> ]@wolfgar: why do you reserve memory for fb1 and fb2 with the fbmem line?
Hi hste
It is a remaining settings from tests (especially when I was trying to understand why I was not able to allocate dma buffers) : this setting is not absolutely mandatory...
Yet, note that I do use fb0 AND fb1 for my XBMC implementation (video is decoded to fb1 while GPU rendering is on fb0, keying and apha blending being ensured by IPU)
Hi xn2000
Regarding GPU, It is normal, You have to use the GPU libraries blobs from BSP V4.0.0 to get it working (the openGLES libs have to match the kernel driver)
The best is to wait a little bit that I release a fully coherent image but if you really want to make it work right now, you can get the compatible vivante libs in the archive for ubuntu I posted
here a few days ago ...
Regarding preempt_rt, ok it is a little out of topic here but I will apply the patchset (I have given it a quick try I only have a few conflicts I should be able to solve) and I will try to explain the way to do it. Basically it is as simple as applying patches and configuring the kernel, in practice solving conflicts may be trivial or quite touchy depending on the cases...
I had no time to investigate my stability issue today but I hope to be able to work on it tomorrow night...
Regards
