Hi,

I am new at this so please excuse me if this question makes little sense

I am running XBMC on a ASUS U36J laptop connected by HDMI to a Sony receiver/HDMI switch

I have a ridiculous problem: when trying to play any movie - regardless of container - that has a 5.1 audio track, the playback lags something terrible and no sound is heard at all.

Disconnecting from the receiver all works fine (??) - no lag.

I wonder if someone could pass on some suggestion to me as to what might be the problem

See Debug log/Easy (wiki).

Likely an issue with you audio config.

As a test try setting

Audio Output: Analog
Speaker configuration: 2.0
Audio Output: Directsound -HDMI

If there's an improvement then it's definitely an audio config issue so refer to http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=146911
