My server runs ubuntu precise (12.04 LTS). In the latest aptitude upgrade I note it wants to upgrade nvidia-current from 295.40-0ubuntu1.2 -> 304.88-0ubuntu0.0.2.

I thought this sort of major version jump wasn't done in ubuntu and wondered if anyone knew why this upgrade is being proposed.

(It ain't really going to matter for the server, as it is general headless and doesn't need flash graphics at all, but the same upgrade is obviously going to be proposed for the clients, which have nvidia graphics and very much need working accelerated nvidia drivers.)

I guess because it works fine ?

I am running precise with 310.xx drivers.

It's just a bit odd for ubuntu to jump versions like that, without having installed some ppa or other.

For those that do have nvidia cards and need decent drivers, 304.64 (cant comment about the .88) works great and has many new bug fixes and features and support for some newer cards which 295 did not at all. I can only imagine that many 500 series and 600 series and others weren't supported at all with 295, which is not acceptable for a LTS release not to suport current video cards out of the box. It is LTS after all.

310.xx still has serious enough bugs imo, since it really is a release meant to support new kernels and in this transition likely borked backward compat somewhat, since older versions failed to install on 3.8 kernels and newer.
