Just updated my system again and it appears to be a lot more robust. ~20% across both CPUs playing 25Mbs 1080/50i H264 with a Motion Compensated de-interlace and with "Prefer VAAPI Render Method" enabled.

The 2955U-based Chromebox is now pretty close to perfect for my needs.
Your user is walter _not_ xbmc. You need to adjust the upstart script or follow the howto to the word, especially the reconfigure of xserver-common is not optional.

I have gone through your installation instructions word by word again and always used copy&paste in order not to introduce typos. I also reconfigured xserver-common again.
In the logs I gave you the wrong id, but I believe the xbmc user is configured correctly, too. Here it is:

What I realized though is that the /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/custom-actions.pkla file could not be written (despite sudo) due to lack of access rights. I did not realize that the file could not be written in my initial installaion. In fact, I can't even cd into the localauthority directory (as adm user walter). Could that be the problem?
The only other deviation from your instructions was that I installed the mini.iso and not the server.iso despite running an UEFI system (Intel NUC i5). I did that because Intel updated the BIOS firmware to address respective issues. I tried the mini and it worked (the SSD boots up without complaints) so I did not worry...
One more thing: I installed the system with an old monitor, connected via MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter. Since the upstart script waits for HDMI to become ready, I thought that might be the problem. But I have connected the NUC to my TV now. The HDMI Out of the NUC is connected to a HDMI switch, which is in turn connected to the TV, but again XBMC does not start up.
What do you think?

Update: I brute-forced my way into localauthority by sudo chmod a+rw localauthority. Then I was able to create the pkla file. But the reboot did not improve the situation. *Sigh*

Stop the xbmc service please. Then Start with your xbmc user: X& enter
After this: DISPLAY=:0 xbmc
What happens?
No Xorg.0.log. No xbmc service running, at least I could not find anything with ps auxww | grep xbmc.
I rebooted the NUC, logged in as xbmc (directly on the NUC, not via ssh) and executed X& enter.
The screen turned black. I tried to get the shell back (Ctrl-c), but the screen kept black. I tried to enter the DISPLAY command blindly, no change.
Anyways, I have got an Xorg.0.log now:

xbmc starts up and appears on the screen. I cannot navigate as the IR is not responding, but I had to fix that within OpenELEC too.

Nope. How did you add the user? It does not exist in etc passwd? Sure you selected everyone in x11-common?
