After using ATV-USBSTICK creator to root my ATV1, I see the launcher, software and NitoTV items.
When I ask for Download>XBMC Eden 11.0, it downloads successfully (45MB), but lauching it fails with an item missing
/Users/Frontrow/Applications/XBMC.app
SSH in confirms there's no such item there.
Solution:
the Applications folder was owned by root. Fix by doing
sudo chown frontrow Applications/
