That's right, it seems to be iOS recognising the xbmc as video compatible consistently that's the hurdle. I'm afraid I don't have a kosher apple airplay receiver (arc or similar) to check it out with.

Interestingly, I have 2 xbmc's (2 raspberry pi's running openelec) that are always on, and iOS often recognises one as video and one as audio. No distinguishable pattern though, so not much help I'm afraid.

Really appreciate your continued efforts - it's certainly not taken for granted..

Debug log of trying to airplay a YouTube video from iPhone 5 (IOS 7.0.2) to XBMC 12.2 Frodo on Openelec.

XBMC appears as an audio only device and audio only was airplayed (the video played on the phone's screen).

Thanks guys...

Ok, now that iOS 7 (.02) is live, I can confirm that I'm having the same issue as above, using Nightly Build 13.0-ALPHA8 Git:20130929-494c67a on Windows 8.

I set XBMC in Debug Log mode, and tested 2 iPhones with the exact same Youtube video one after the next, closing and starting XBMC between each test.

The device still running iOS6 AirPlayed the video from the Youtube App without issue. The iOS7 device AirPlayed the exact same video from the same version of the YouTube App, as if it was an audio file (while the video continued to play on the iOS device - which isn't normal. The video usually 'blanks' on the iOS when airplaying a video from the iOS device).

I have created XBMC Tracker issue 14619 for this finding, and have attached both logs to the ticket.

Thanks,

[EDIT]
Strange finding! After noticing that XBMC had overridden my advancedsettings flag for debug level 2, I went into the settings and made the appropriate changes.

HOWEVER, now the iOS 7 device is also able to throw the video up!

Something strange is going on here (and I don't believe it's a user setup given the fact that multiple people have noticed this behavior - including the fact that it appears to 'occur sometimes')
[/EDIT]
hey guys,

signed up to throw in my findings. From my testing it appears to be ios7 related. Using airfoil on my windows 8 laptop to xbmc Frodo still works without issue but my iphone to it does not work. Also i was experience the same problem with a friends sonos set up but that same sonos set up worked fine with airfoil. I tried the suggestion of using a nightly but other problems with the nightly cause it not to make it worth it. In the meantime i have been using http://sourceforge.net/projects/shairport4w/ which is working pretty good audio wise (it still does funny things with my iphone like randomly doesnt work or it connects and nothing happens).

Thanks again for every XBCM team, like Jayb0ne said, we are not taking you guys for granted, we appreciate everything.
Maybe some good news:

After trying for about 10 times I managed to airplay a video from my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.02) camera roll to my XBMC 13.0 alpha8 machine (Win7) !!

I read on several sites that we could expect a new iOS version soon so let's hope the issue will be fixed.

[EDIT]
The fact that it took 10 times to airplay a video is caused by my router which doesn't support multicast/bonjour.
Airplaying video seems to work now except for some specific streams/apps.
just updated my macbook to 10.9 and working with frodo without issue. it's definitely ios7 that's borked everything.
Airplay works fine with iPhone 5 (iOS 7.02) and XBMC 13 alpha 8 (Win7) for videos on cnn.com and reuters.com.
No issues with Airplaying videos from the Youtube app either. So far I'm quite happy with the latest montly build.

However I'm still unable to airplay videos from the "iTunes Live" festival app and the iPhone 5S/5C Keynote video on apple.com.
So maybe there's an issue with specific streams?

Can anyone from the XBMC team please comment on this? Memphiz?
There are still a dozens of streams out there which the xbmc player can't play. The apple keynote stuff is one of them (using the unsupported mov reference format - not even ffmpeg supports it).

See for the apple keynote problem:

So when airplay icon is visible the hardest part for airplay is done. Everything else failing after that is mostly related to the xbmc player...
Shot in the dark for all of you where xbmc is only recognized as audio target but not video target (this test builds don't fix any playback issues - it might change the target recognition but not more - might even do nothing ...)

Thanks Memphis, just as a note; for me if I switch xeroconfig off and on a couple of times then xbmc will pick up video airplay instead of just audio. Seem to be able to do that ptretty consistently. (This is without trying Memphis' fix which I will try soon)
Unfortunately, using the macos version i get no changes, sometime i get speaker icon, sometimes i get screen icon

What i have done is:

1. removed userdata
2. installed Memphiz version
3. switched on zeroconf and airplay
4. switched on/off wifi to see that i have the screen icon rather than the speaker icon appearing instead.

Let me know if you need more testing or specfic logs
Nahhh this is something with ios7 and i am pretty sure that it would behave the Same on original atv2 running an old 4.x ios Version (that is where we copied the announcement from) - Logs don't help. Problem happens on the client not in xbmc (everyone can check the zeroconf announcement of xbmc by running bonjourbrowser or the like - it is always the Same but ios7 picks it up wrong randomly)

And no - we can't use more current announcements cause xbmc does not Support FairPlay encryption...
I can confirm that I have problems using ios7 airplay with older ATV2 software. Not sure of the exact version of the ATV2 software, but I can check later.
i can confirm that the linux version with Gotham Alpha 8 and iOS 7.0.2 [iphone 4 & ipad mini] the video is working.
not for every app for what i see, but for the most.
Airplay works fine with iPhone 5 (iOS 7.00) and XBMC 13 alpha 8 (Win7) for the YouTube app, built-in music app, photos in photos app, videos in photos app, daily motion app and for most of the other apps.
Memphiz, what bothers me is that there are other airplay servers (like pioneer avrs, etc) that I would assume will also need updating to work with new ios7

I still think it's a buggy ios7, waiting for a patch from apple Sad
