* slow next picture

i have been wondering why it sometimes takes/feels so long for xbmc to show the next picture.
i measured it and a normal jpeg picture can take upto 13 secs!
i have narrowed it down to some strange message in the xbmc.log:

13-01-2005 23:25:19 info msg:application transferred too many scanlines

when this pops up, then it was such a case in which it takes around 13 secs.

i included the xbmc.log down below

how to reproduce it:

select a jpeg picture (green button).
(so i am not doing an automatic slideshow.)
zoom in 4 steps (4 times dpad up)
order for next picture (dpad right)
and then wait for 13 secs for that to pop up

normal times from picture to picture is 2 to 3 secs.
zooming in 1 times makes this 3.3 secs.
zooming in 2 times makes this 4.5 secs.
zooming in 3 times makes this 7 secs.
zooming in 4 times makes this 13 secs !
zooming in 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 times makes this the same as no zoom: 2 to 3 secs.

maybe it is a fault or else it's a feature

mind that these are straight from a digital camera and are quite large.


* huge log

i included the xbmc.log down below and sorry that it is so long, but that is another observation:
xbmc puts so many of these same lines into the log:

13-01-2005 23:25:19 debug having to hold the current image (f:\pictures\2005_09_13\img_0340.jpg) while we load f:\pictures\2005_09_13\img_0343.jpg

there is pages of them while going from one pic to the other. a bit overdone i reckon.


* side effects

while playing aroud with this i also noticed that leaving a zoomed in picture can take quite some time.
the same kinda pauze when going from picture to picture. also the screen then sometimes is black for
some seconds. all in all you then start to think that the thing is hanging, but then it pops up with the dirlisting.
i think that this will disappear when the slow picture showing is fixed.

i also, in all this playing around, got xbmc to crash once when doing a picture zoom in 1 times.
i have observed this more this past week. but unfortunately this does not show up in the log.
and on the next attempt it works fine. so this is not easily reproducible. i will try and catch it next time.

the reason is that when you zoom in it reloads the current image at a higher quality in order to better show the image. this takes time, and we can't cancel the process at the moment, and this would not be a simple thing to change (would require altering the image library to check a callback every scan line on in the jpeg loader), as on xbox you can't just kill a thread - you must wait for it to finish. if we could kill the loading thread earlier then it wouldn't be a problem.

the debug log stuff could be cleaned up, yeah.
