I have an issue I am trying to come up with a solution for and I am looking for some help.

I have an openelec XBMC running on an always on PC. Love it and is a great media center for me and the family. I just installed WMC 7 on a different PC for some cablecard recording. Have TW and most everything is locked down as far as the copy flag. I am using an XBox 360 as a media extender.

This is were I run into an issue, Since my XBMC is always on when I am using my programmed remote (MCE) to control the 360 it is also "controlling" my XBMC at the same time. I have changed languages, etc on the XBMC while using the 360. Not desirable. I have thought about trying to setup my XBMC to use universal remote codes via the keyboard.xml, but wouldn't the MCE commands still be processsed? Is there some way to "pick" what protocol is used?

What would be a good way to approach this? I would prefer to leave the XBMC running all the time as I using it to feed whole house audio. Guess I could turn it on and off when I use the extender, but would prefer the on/off be remote control based and that would open a different can of worms.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
Get a different remote solution for xbmc. Yatse is good if you have an android tablet or phone. Personally I favour these, http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Sapphire_Remote

Thanks. I already use Yatse and it is great. I need a physical remote for the kids though.
The sapphire looks interesting, but I would like to stick with just one remote. I currently have a JP1 remote I have programed for all my devices. Plus wouldn't XBMC still respond to the MCE signals when I am controlling the 360? Is there a way to turn off MCE and just use the RCA universal protocol?
since you have a JP1 remote, can't you change the MCE protocol for one of your devices to a different address in RMIR? thankfully i dont have any devices that conflict, but each IR protocol (MCE in your case) should support more than one device, you just have to somehow set the receiver and remote to speak on a different address than the other identical device. more searching of the JP1 forum might help. what i don't recall is how to set your MCE receiver to a different channel, or if it is even necessary and just might work w/ a change in RMIR

good luck

This is great and gets me headed down a good path. In XBMC how can I determine what MCE device number is being used for the remote? Also how could I set that number?
