I could not find anything on the forums that fitted my issues so hope this helps someone else one day.
Not sure why the dns on the server would cause the slow menu but it did, when i looked in the debug log it did not tell me anything what would point to such an issue.

XBMC on Windows 8 x64 (Desktop).
XBMCbuntu (HTPC).
Mysql & Samba Share (Media Server Ubuntu).
The Issue:
Both systems suffering from slow laggy menus.
Playback was fine and no missing files, images etc.
The Cause:
DNS not set correctly on Media Server.
The Solution:
Edited the DNS on the media server to point to working DNS.
