I cannot get this danged thing into recovery mode. What is the deal? Pressing the button does nothing...
So I went from bricked to not bricked and back tp android. Then I couldn't figure out how to get the danged system to move to Linux and so I found a way back int recovery and tried to just flash the image in the first part of the "Fresh install as the part with the "2 minutes of black and then reboot wasn't happeneing.

Now I am hosed again and getting the pink screen....

I am able to create a boot sd card but then when I go to use it like I did before I just get this:

Just a pink screen. And I get the same output even if the sd card is empty. Without the sd card I just get the No boot media detected or whatever that message is.
bluemeane:

If you tried to update with just the Geniatech Linux/XBMC image from Android, it won't work. The XDA Linux/XBMC would be the image file you'd want to use. It was designed to use the Android SPI.

If you can get back to Android, you should try that.

I went from Android to Geniatech Linux, very simple install.

I believe the poster I responded to tried to install Geniatech Linux/XBMC by updating the .img file alone from Android instead of make a boot SD card as per instructions in the fist post of this thread.

Ah, I understand. Can't help with that, just did it with the card on two devices, and apart from some stutter on 1080p it's great.

Dan:

Which devices and which Linux? I have an ATV520 running Geniatech Linux/XBMC. I only use 720p resolution, so I don't know whether 1080p pushes the hardware too close to the limit.

ATV1200 and the second method on the front page, copy files to the card, restart with switch, wait ten seconds, release and leave the box for 5 mins while it did it's thing.

It was that good that I bought another (cheap clone) on eBay and replaced the pc in the living room.
Does anyone have any ideas to help with my issue?
Could anyone confirm that this box works with the two imges from the first post in this thread ?

Folks:

Some good news. I seem to have found a work-around that'll allow at least some modding of Linux/XBMC.

Mostly, I wanted to do mods to the default skin, Confluence, but it was in the read only area of the file system. I noticed that a new skin would install in writable area on 'root/.xbmc/', but I didn't want to have to change from the default skin.

So, what I did was I downloaded the latest version of Confluence from GitHub and installed from the System/Addons it as a .zip file:

https://github.com/uNiversaI/skin.conflu...v2.1.5.zip

Now, Confluence resides in:

Code:
root/.xbmc/addons/skin.confluence-2.1.5/

The screen went black when I installed it from a .zip file under 'System/Addons' but pressing the 'Back' key brought it back to normal.

To test whether it was active or not, I used Putty to 'cd' to the Sound folder. I then used the 'mv' command to rename two sound files. These are the one that bracket every error message XBMC throws at you: Bink... Bonk! So, instead of being .wav files, I changed the extensions to .off.

My Sound folder looks like this now:

Code:
[[email protected] sounds]# ls
back.wav     cursor.wav   out.off      sounds.xml
click.wav    notify.off   shutter.wav

The '.off' files are ignored by the skin as non-existent and I don't have to hear those annoying error sounds. I do like the click and select sounds though, otherwise I would have just shut the sounds off altogether.

It's not much, but at least any skin related mods can be done now.

Folks:

Here's another Confluence mod based on the post above. This is an accessibility mod that I really needed because I don't have very good eyesight. But since, by the My Gica's very nature, most of us are watching our screens from further away, I thought others might find it handy.

What I did was to take the thumbnail focus image, the blue border that wraps around thumbnails everywhere, and altered it to be a lot more visible. I then replaced it for the original image.

Here's a screenshot of the end result:

Image

Here's the altered .png file:

http://justatinker.com/XBMC/folder-focus.png (right-click (or equivalent) to download.))

I used Putty and the 'mv' command to insert the file where it belongs but you could just use the File Manager in XBMC if you like.

First, copy the folder-focus.png to an SD card or USD stick and insert it into the My Gica. Log in with Putty and type 'cd /' to get to the root directory. Then enter:

mv media/usb2/folder-focus.png root/.xbmc/addons/skin.confluence-2.1.5/media/folder-focus.png

The 'usb#' may be different depending on where you put the .png file.

Now, everywhere in XBMC that has thumbnails will be highlighted as above, making it much easier to navigate.

It's just another simple mod that makes life easier (at least for me), but it shows the possibilities now that the skin is accessible in a writable area.
