I'm trying to install the ubuntu nightly build on the new intel celeron NUC and I get the following error:

xbmc : Depends: xbmc-bin (< 2:13.0~git20140210.0206-699163e-0saucy.1~) but 2:13.0~git20140211.0204-82b8c3bc-0saucy is to be installed

Is this because the new NUC isn't supported yet, or is there something I'm doing wrong?
no, we currently have build problems with the nightlies, they randomly fail, which is the cause for the error.
You'd be better of with the ppa from http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=165707
Would I have any better luck using ubuntu 14.04?
no. If this is a bay trail based machine, you will need updated mesa packages from my mesa ppa. see the link I gave you above.
@wsnipex - for this particular NUC I've heard from multiple sources that only kernels 3.14x work well...3.13 has had issues.

I have one of the DN2820FYKH0 incoming as well. Planning to follow your Linux - vaapi-sse4 guide with possible exception of using a diff 3.14 kernel ppa and Saucy iso base.

You foresee that working or causing untold hardship due to mismatched dependencies, etc?

Aforementioned sources on 3.14 kernel requirement for this unit.

unless there are regressions in 3.14, you should be fine. In any case, let us know how it works out.
Any new info on this to share?
I gave up on it. Went back to openelec.
@wsnipex

So I am sitting at the following state:
trusty-server-amd64_21feb14.iso + 3.14-rc4 kernel + bunch of the prelim stuff like ssh keys, firewall, etc done.

Haven't started any XBMC or its related packages yet. Does it matter if I am already at latest kernel at this point?

Your Linux - vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing guide does kernel last before packages updated...I could roll back to 3.13 if need be.

Everything looks to work at this point although I'm only sitting with a box and a functioning terminal and such at this point. ;-)
its fine if you have the kernel installed before the xbmc stuff, the order doesn't matter here.

btw, trusty already has mesa 10.1(rc), so you shouldn't need my mesa ppa and it wouldn't be used by default anyway.
This is working EXCELLENT. Thanks for assistance.
