Full Version: Out with ReplayGain, In with R128?

ReplayGain is pretty old technology (from 2001). New versions of media manager software (foobar, MusicBee, etc) now support the R128 standard, which is arguably more accurate at establishing perceived volume levels. As I recently updated my music library and utilize this algorithm to set volume tags, I did some testing and realized XBMC does not support this standard.

I understand the XMBC team is constantly hard at work always making this amazing app better and better.... Has there been any thoughts/discussions on implementing R128? I've tried searching these forums and the web, and have found no references to XMBC and R128.

If nothing else, I hope this may get a discussion started!
Forgive my ignorance and or mispresented info.

It would seem that XBMC does in fact support R128.... but that there is an issue with the way XBMC handles ReplayGain tags.

I'm not sure that XBMC supports R128 per se -- it seems to just store eg. an integer for track and album gain without any reference to dB or LU. But your tagger can (possibly) write R128 computed values into the defined RPG tags and that will be used. If you have a mix of RPG and R128 computed gains, you probably want to provide a correction factor to one or the other so they have more or less same perceived loudness. If they are all R128 you can simply set an offset in the music playback settings to suit your taste. (I might do some testing to confirm this is how it works.)
