Can a Harmony Ultimate be used to control Chromebox this way? What device do you choose under Harmony when setting up remote? Thanks.

Assuming it's used in conjunction with the Smart Hub (which actually handles the BT duties), then I'd expect so, just program it as a Sony Playstation 3. The remote itself is IR only, and would need a USB IR receiver if not used with the Smart Hub - one of the MCE ones listed on the wiki would be my recommendation.

this is correct except it is no longer necessary to program it as a ps3. as of a few versions ago logitech added the ability to control a pc over bluetooth. sadly the ability to add non-media keyboard buttons (abc, tab, etc.) to activities is still nonexistent but supposedly they are working on it. whenever you need something like that you can just pull up the soft keyboard in the app but it would be nice to be able to map them on the remote.
Okay, thank you both... worth a try.
hi guys. first of all, thanks for all of your hard work with programming.
i discovered xbmc by accident 6 months ago, and i have not stopped smiling and spreading the word since.
Question.1
i should be receiving my asus chromebox next week,(upgrading from gbox running linux) and i want to go standalone openelec, but my question is, if i have a critical failure of openelec, i would just re install it, instead of trying to fix it, so if this happens, do you have to put chrome back in before you can reload openelec, or will it just go back in without chrome in stand alone.
Question2.
is there any real advantage of going standalone rather than duel boot, as i want from the box is xbmc?
sorry for the dumb question, but i fix john deere agricultural machines for a living, and not computers. all the best. steve.

nope, just reinstall OpenELEC from USB media (or use the built-in reset function)

if all you want is XBMC, then standalone is the way to go for sure. Boot will be faster, suspend will actually work, and you won't have to deal with ChromeOS at all - it will act just like an ordinary PC.
After little over a month, one of my rear usb ports has gone dead on my Asus version. I read another user having this problem on a different forum.

I am beginning to question the build quality by Asus on these units. Not happy.
given the amount of insertions/removals the USB ports on my ChromeBox have seen over the past 8 months, if anyone was likely to have an issue it would be me. Bad hardware happens, and anecdotal evidence from forum posts does not necessarily indicate a widespread problem. Just RMA it and get a warranty replacement
thank you for the quick response to my questions mat, much appreciated.
I am having an odd problem with my Chromebox. Whenever I go to update my movie library I see it queries the TVDB instead of the TMDB. The source is set correctly but the only way I can get the library updated is to go into videos and then drill down to the source folder and scan for changes from there. I have even removed rebooted and then added the source back but the problem still persists.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks

Bill
Help!! I got a HP Chromebox yesterday for the purpose of running XBMC. I watched Lon's video on how to dual boot Chrome OS and OpenELEC for running XBMC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gQgSDdZuLY). Everything was going according to plan. I partitioned the drive using the script with 6 GB for OpenElec. Then it rebooted and "repaired" itself. Then I attempted the recovery from the recovery media (32GB SD Card) I created with the chrome imageburner. Turned out that the SD card was corrupt so that didn't work. I used a Windows 8 machine to create another recovery media on a 16 GB SD Card. The Chromebox ran through the recovery and said to remove the media and it would reboot. I did that and it rebooted and got stuck at a black screen where it says "Booting the Kernel". I haven't been able to get past this. I redownloaded the recovery media about 5 times now and always the same result. I tried imaging the SD card with Chromium OS and it would not recognize an OS on the card so I could not recover to that OS. It's not booting to Chrome or OpenElec and it's looking like I'm stuck. Any ideas? Is there any way to manually get to the drive and remove the partition so I can restore Chrome OS back on it? I'd like to get it to complete the dual boot still if possible. Right now it's acting like a brick.

Figured it out - I had set up the boot sequence to do the quick boot to OpenELEC and the issues I was seeing were not related to Chrome OS and instead were related to the OpenElec which must not have fully installed. By holding down CTRL+D when I rebooted the Chromebox, it booted up to Chrome and then I could re-run the EZ script and now all is good to go. Thanks for putting together this script!

Bill, as your question is not related to the ChromeBox hardware or this setup script, you'll likely find more helpful responses in the General Help/Support forum. If you've already removed/re-added the source, I'd probably recommend deleting the video library database file and rebooting.

it's unfortunate that Lon wasn't able to edit his video to have everything in the correct chronological order. Obviously performing the factory reset after running the dual boot setup will undo it, as the recovery process re-partitions the HDD and reloads ChromeOS, and if you try to follow the video in sequence it can be confusing. Plus, since it doesn't reset the boot flags (which are stored in firmware), it's possible to end up in a situation like yours where it auto-boots the legacy BIOS, then tries to load ChromeOS and fails.

in older versions of the script, I prevented people from setting the boot options before the dual boot setup was fully completed, but this restricted people who wanted to dual boot something other than OE or Ubuntu, so I relaxed it.

My Asus Chromebox also had a non-functioning USB port on the back. I think it was the bottom one. It was like that right out of the box so seems like a manufacturing defect on some units.
Dear All,

I am trying to install a "fast" 1sec dual boot Openelec (default choice) /Chrome OS on a Asus chromebox.

I followed all the instructions on the first message of the topic and on http://kodi.wiki/view/ASUS_Chromebox , including the two stage process in openelec installation and I especially unscrewed the protective screw etc.

I can now dual boot Chrome OS and Openlec using CTRL D / CTRL L, but my choice of fast 1sec dual boot openelec by default is not working. I still see the developper screen during 30sec and the system is booting on chrome os by default. I reran the script several times and tried other boot options with no results, I always get the same default 30sec boot on chrome os. I have also tried a factory reset and complete re-install of openlec without success.

Do you have any clue on how to solve my problem?

Thanks a lot,

Regards,

Alex
Alex,

looks like the fix I made in v3.1 of the script broke that function for older versions of ChromeOS. I just pushed a script update (3.2) which fixes it, so re-download and then re-run the script and it should work correctly
Is the chromebox running openelec able to play live TV (interlaced SD or HD) without issue? I was looking at the Celeron NUC until I read it doesn't handle live TV well at all.

Anyone using PVR on the chromebox?

there aren't any issues that I'm aware of; the ChromeBox is capable of much higher quality deinterlacing than the N2830 NUC, but you'll have to wait until Helix/Kodi 14 for that. All of the interlaced content I've tested (480i, 576i, 1080i) has played back without issue.
