there's no reason whatsoever that OpenELEC shouldn't work, or at the very least that the installer shouldn't work. Trying another OS isn't likely to help at this point
Well, so here's an update...
I came back into work this morning and set it all up again with the Displayport. It boots again and I have the same issues as yesterday. So, I connected both the display port AND the HDMI to my other T240 monitor... This time I put in the installation drive and booted and when I selected option 2, it booted, then switched video to HDMI to complete the installation. Now that I have OpenElec installed and configured, I rebooted the system without DisplayPort and blammo! It works! So I think I now have a functioning dedicated openelec box.
The TL;DR for this is - to install standalone, I had to connect both DisplayPort AND HDMI.

I have just purchased the Chrombox and am working on installing the standalone setup with Openelec. I have completed step 5 and then moved to step 6 created the stick... On the reboot all i get is a black screen. I have tried many monitors but no changes. I have tried the escape 2 option at so many different time but nothing is working.... what can i do at this point??
I figured it out would appear that moved the keyboard to the front USB and the install USB to the back and it worked... although maybe after 100 reboots i finally got the timing correct

now that you have OpenELEC installed, does it still give you no video (eg, no SeaBIOS text / boot menu text) before the OE splash screen? If so, it would be really helpful if you can extract a certain log for me. Hit me up on google chat/hangouts and I can walk you thru what I need

One other item of note: If I boot my Chromebox with no video connected at all, and then connect either HDMI or DisplayPort, I get no video and must reboot the unit.
Sounds like markcf105's issue is very similar to mine. Similar symptoms. Were you asking for a file from his machine or mine? When I boot now it jumps straight to the Openelec screen. I don't see the SeaBIOS text.

The development is still ongoing (in a really high tempo

Easiest way is to create a bootable ChromiumOS USB stick, boot from it, and re-download / re-run the script.

Will this fix the random screen freezing i am experiencing? I don't have any issues with freezing if menus are on screen while video is playing back. what i am getting is the video locking up, but sound continues, it's totally random.

no, that was a tweak I made to try and help the people who aren't seeing the SeaBIOS boot menu text on startup. Your issue is likely due to an Intel driver bug, and can be worked around for the time being by disabling hardware acceleration in the XBMC video playback settings.

I've got a problem similar to trick420 and markcf105, but on a dual boot. I followed the instructions for a ChromeOS+OpenELEC install on a new device. It looked like everything went fine when installing, but i've got a black screen when booting to openelec. ChromeOS works fine.
I'll try a few things later tonight. Let me know if a can help.

Thanks for that answer. I was just about to ask that same question since I had flashed the firmware a couple of weeks ago and I saw that you've made a few updates since then. I used the chromium usb stick and had no problem flashing the latest firmware. Everything's been working smoothly with this set up since I got the external usb drive issues I was having sorted out a couple of weeks ago. This chromebox makes a great xbmc machine.
I also finally got the i3 version of it a couple of days ago, but I guess you don't need a guinea pig anymore since I see you've already updated everything for the i3 version also. Keep up the great work and thanks for answering everyone's questions!

I had the same problem on my first attempt. I wound up having to reinstall ChromeOS and do the steps again. It worked for me on the second attempt. Not sure why it didn't work the first time.

For my system, I see that the video switches during the boot sequence. I had to use a DVI to HDMI cable to get the BIOS boot screen. At that point I can choose the boot source. Once I choose, the DVI port switches off and video is now available on the HDMI port. So basically, to get it all working, I had to have two displays up and running. Now that it's all installed (standalone thought, not dual boot) it boots fine, although I never see the BIOS boot screen.

I think I have the same problem. I installed Coreboot and now I can't do anything. It's black from the start and I can't even reach the screen to choose to boot from USB to install OpenELEC or even restore the stock firmware. I don't have a display-port cable to try that either. My only idea right now is to try to restore the stock firmware but i'd need to do it blind with someone telling me exactly what to type.

I'm still working on this, but best I can tell what is happening is that the connected display is not responding in time/correctly, so the VGA BIOS is switching to the other connection type, and obviously not finding anything, but doesn't go back to the original connection.
I certainly don't think you need to restore the stock firmware; you just need to find a monitor that "behaves" well enough for you to get OE installed
