Thanks, it was just in case Wink
Irusak on openelec forum corrected the script form to correct curl error 77 that i was getting on kodi 15 (i don't rember if i get this error also in kodi 14)

Code:
curl -L -k -O goo.gl/HSZer4
bash HSZer4

But i always get this error:
Error downloading firmware version information; cannot proceed.

Also if i try after a reboot

it's an OE bug (they moved/renamed a certificate file incorrectly, which curl doesn't like), it will be fixed in the next beta. Though I still don't know why you're insisting on needlessly updating the firmware.

My Asus i3 (Mint box) is still running a pretty early 2.x version. Never felt a need to update, but am I missing something important?

not really. You can always check the changelog in the OP and see if there's anything of interest. The only new feature as of late is the ability to default to booting from USB.
Really need some help please ...

So I wanted to install OpenElec as standalone. Everything was working fine until the last reboot. I don't understand what happened. It went so fast I didn't even pressed ESC and I was stuck on the Booting from hard disk screen. My keyboard doesn't work from here and nothing happens even if I wait which is logical since the hard disk is empty ... I know there's the Chromium solution but I'm not sure I really need to do this.

I'm not an expert and I really don't know what went wrong. And the question I'm so afraid to ask : did I just brick my Chromebox ?

no. http://kodi.wiki/view/Chromebox#Troubles...orkarounds

just re-create your install media from another machine / using a different USB stick/SD card

Yeah I read that ! Well I don't see the "Press ESC for boot menu". And I don't really get why my flash drives worked good during the EZ Setup but now, nothing appears.

Should I try with a different flash drive and if yes, what should I put on it ? Chromium ?

not closely enough it seems.

Quote:If you don't see the 'Press ESC for boot menu' text, then the issue is with your boot media, so try using a different USB flash drive.

If the install media created by the script doesn't work (or you forget to create it before rebooting), then you can simply download the latest stable version (or beta/RC if you'd like) from OpenELEC's website here. The ChromeBox runs the 'x86-64' version of OpenELEC, and it's recommended that you download the disk image version, and create the install media, as per the instructions on the OpenELEC wiki.
Holy fuck it works. Thank you so much, I'm sorry for the dumb questions.
lol
hmm, LoL too ...a little Wink for I just wonder, as i still plan to make the jump if there is a "wrong" or "good" key to use. Also, it seems 2 keys are needed : one for the backup of the stock Firmware and one for the install.

I just have one here. A 1gb usb2 noname key.

Can i use it to first backup, then transfer the backup to my windows station (hoping if i need to restore to be able to copy it back to a flash drive without having permission or worst in the process...) and then use it for the install ?

Also, do I need to have a special formating for the keys ?

Thanks again Big Grin

yes you can use the same USB stick for both, provided you copy the firmware backup file off it first, since the OpenELEC installer will completely overwrite whatever is there. FAT/FAT32 is fine. There's no way to know ahead of time if a USB stick will boot properly, you just have to try it and see. If it doesn't work, redo the USB installer from another machine and/or use another USB stick as per the wiki entry I quoted above
Thanks, I will cross my fingers and begin chanting icantations on my pretty old but pretty reliable falsh drive ('till now at least) Big Grin

Edit: Well, in the same time i have - forgive the expression - a shitload of spare hdd i can throw in a usb enclosure. I don't see no reasons for it not to work but a green light would help here Big Grin

I suppose so, as long as you don't mind the drive being re-partitioned/re-formatted. However, in my experience, spinning platter drives often don't power up and initialize quickly enough, certainly not in the 500ms max expected for a USB flash drive
